Freight Driver Operations App

Ionic/Capacitor driver app with background geolocation, navigation handoff, offline-tolerant sync, and keep-awake workflows for live freight jobs.

Outcomes

Channel

Native mobile

Drivers work from phones, not dispatch desktops.

Tracking

Background GPS

Location continues under real OS constraints.

Resilience

Local-first state

Jobs survive brief offline stretches.

Context

Freight ops fail when the app sleeps, loses GPS, or forces drivers into desktop-shaped UX.

Challenge

Drivers need job context, navigation, and location reporting while moving — often with flaky connectivity and aggressive OS background limits. A web-only ops tool could not survive the cab.

Approach

We delivered an Angular/Ionic Capacitor app with background geolocation, SQLite-style local persistence, keep-awake, camera/file plugins, and launch-navigator integration. Native Android/iOS packaging absorbed Cordova/Capacitor plugin realities for production fleets.

Architecture

Ionic + Angular + Capacitor mobile client, background geolocation and local storage plugins, native Android/iOS shells, REST integration with logistics backends.

Scope

  • Job workflows
  • Background geolocation
  • Navigation launch
  • Offline-tolerant state
  • Native packaging

Constraints

  • OS background execution limits
  • Battery vs accuracy trade-offs
  • Plugin maintenance across Capacitor upgrades

Solution highlights

  • Background geolocation as a first-class feature
  • Keep-awake and alert audio for critical job moments
  • Capacitor sync discipline for Android/iOS parity

Technologies

Results

  • Driver-ready mobile packaging for Android and iOS
  • Background location suitable for live job tracking
  • Navigation and alert patterns tuned for in-cab use
  • Local persistence to survive connectivity gaps

Lessons learned

  • Logistics apps die in the background if geolocation is naive.
  • Navigation handoff beats rebuilding maps badly.
  • Budget time for native plugin breakage on every OS upgrade.
